Repeat Prescriptions

We understand that managing medication can sometimes feel confusing. Below you’ll find answers to common questions about prescriptions and medication at Captain French Surgery.

Being in charge of ordering your own repeat prescriptions ensures you get the medicine you need at the time you need it. This can help prevent the build-up of unused or old medicines at home which improves safety, reduces medicines waste and saves valuable NHS resources.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please contact our reception team and we’ll be happy to help.

Ordering Repeat Prescriptions

How do I order a repeat prescription?

You can request your repeat medication by:

Please allow 2–3 working days for us to process your request. Your pharmacy may need additional time to prepare your medication.

Can I order my prescription over the phone?

To ensure patient safety and reduce errors, we do not routinely take repeat prescription requests over the phone. Please use Accurx, the NHS app or submit your request in writing.

How do I request medication that is not on repeat?

Often new medicines or short term medicines such as pain killers and antibiotics are added as 'acute' meaning you cant request these online. Once they are deemed suitable to continue long term- your GP will add to your repeat upon review or request. You can contact us by telephone or our online patient access service to request what you need in the meantime.

What is Repeat dispensing?

Repeat dispensing refers to a signed batch of up to 12 months worth of medication. These are medicines that are stable and long term. These are readily available for you at the pharmacy without the need to request your medicines from the surgery each month. Your pharmacy will let you know when your batch is almost complete as this often indicates you are due for a medication review. If you are interested in setting this up- please contact the surgery and our reception team can organise this for you.

Prescription Processing

How long will my prescription take?

We aim to process prescriptions within 2–3 working days (excluding weekends and bank holidays).
Please check with your pharmacy regarding their dispensing times.

Why has my prescription request been declined?

This may be because:

  • You are due a medication review
  • The request was made too early
  • The medication is no longer authorised for repeat issue

If you are unsure, please contact us and we will explain the reason.

Medication Reviews

What is a medication review?

A medication review is a routine check with a GP, nurse, or clinical pharmacist to ensure your medicines are:

  • Still appropriate for you
  • Working effectively
  • Not causing side effects

You may be asked to attend a review before further prescriptions are issued. This helps us provide safe and effective care.

Pharmacy & Collection

How do I change my nominated pharmacy?

You can update your nominated pharmacy:

  • Via the NHS app
  • Via your new nominated pharmacy
  • By informing our reception team

Can someone else collect my medication?

Yes. However, some pharmacies may ask for identification or confirmation of permission.

Can you arrange delivery of my medication?

We are not a dispensing practice and cannot arrange delivery of your medicines for you. Your local nominated pharmacy can assist you with this if you ask them.

Urgent & Special Requests

I’ve lost my medication. What should I do?

Please contact the surgery as soon as possible. Replacement prescriptions are issued at the GP’s discretion.

I’m going on holiday. Can I get extra medication?

If you are travelling, please request your medication well in advance. We can usually provide enough to cover your trip. For longer stays abroad, we can offer up to 3 months supply.

Side Effects & Concerns

What should I do if I experience side effects?

If you notice mild side effects, please contact the surgery for advice.

If you experience severe symptoms such as swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, chest pain, or collapse, call 999 immediately.
